Abrutal polar vortex will bury the Big Apple under snow on Sunday and then generate deadly single-digit temperatures, but with a wind chill of 15 degrees Fahrenheit below zero (-26 degrees Celsius), The Post reported.
The city of New York could see up to 6 inches of snow in a northeasterly storm that will begin around midday and continue into the night, possibly lasting into Wednesday, according to Fox Weather meteorologist Cody Braud.
Up to half a foot of snow will also cover Washington, D.C. and the I-95 corridor from Philadelphia to Boston.
The last time New York saw six inches of snow was on December 16, 2020, however, it is the freezing temperatures that will really hit hard.
“The cold will be even more dangerous than the snow,” Braud warned. “With the wind chill, Tuesday morning will probably feel below zero.”
There will be a “Code Blue” in New York City
Wind chills of -15 degrees will occur from Monday night into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected to whip the region through midweek, prompting a “Code Blue” cold weather alert from city officials.
“Outreach teams will be out across all five boroughs to connect New Yorkers experiencing homelessness with shelter,” the city’s Office of Emergency Management posted on X. “No one who is experiencing homelessness and seeking shelter in New York City during a Code Blue will be denied access.”
The polar vortex is transporting Arctic air directly from Siberia, giving approximately 300 million Americans a taste of the tundra.
The cold snap will deeply freeze at least 20 states, from the plains to the Great Lakes and the Northeast, with the mercury dropping to a staggering -50 in parts of the Midwest and Ohio River Valley.
Experts warn that deadly hypothermia and frostbite will threaten millions of people.
“New York City is forecast to receive moderate snowfall tomorrow from late morning until midnight. Our salt spreaders and plows are ready to take care of our streets. Limit your driving during the snow tomorrow and use public transportation if you need to travel,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams posted on social media.
Temperatures change Trump’s inauguration plans
The brutal weather will make the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday an indoor affair, the first time the ceremony will be held inside the Capitol Rotunda in 40 years.
“This could be one of the coldest presidential inaugurations since Ronald Reagan took office in 1985,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva.
The NFL would also be affected
Snow could also be a curveball for the NFL playoff game in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, where there is likely to be low visibility and snow accumulation on the field when the Eagles face the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Game.
And the winter weather will not let up, as meteorologists have their eyes on another winter storm that is likely to develop in the South late next week and could reach the East Coast, dumping more snow than will fall this weekend.
