Cynthia Erivo has revealed that there were tears when she and Wicked co-star Ariana Grande learned that they have been nominated for an Oscar.
The announcement of the nominations came when Erivo was flying from London to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival and she almost missed the moment thanks to WiFi problems on the flight.
The 38-year-old was speaking whilst at The Elvis Suite and she explained the problems she had with her connection, in comments reported by The Daily Mail.
“We started taking off and WiFi comes on, so I log into the WiFi,” she recalled.
“I don’t like to know what’s happening until I know what’s happening, [so] I sort of put my phone away.
“It’s logged into the WiFi. If it happens, I’m sure I will know because things will come through and I’ll see it.”
“I look over [at my phone] and nothing’s happening. It’s sort of like 1:45 or something,” she continued. “This is a nightmare, this is a nightmare!
“And then at like five [minutes] to 2 [am], my phone goes nuts. I had [just] fallen asleep and then woke up and my phone is going off.”
The special moment
That was when the floods of messages came though and the tears began to flow as she had been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
“[I] just cried my eyes out. It’s one of those moments where you’re sort of like, I guess I didn’t know how much I wanted it,” she shared.
“I guess I didn’t know how much it would mean to me. You know how much it means, and then it happens and you really know how much it means.”
“I voice note Ariana and we’re both tearfully crying. We’re a mess,” she said.
