The end of the season for the Colorado Buffaloes may not have been what they hoped for, despite having one of the best seasons for the university in the last 10 years. Under the leadership of Deion Sanders, they won nine games, the most since their 10-win season in 2016. However, they lost their most important game – the Alamo Bowl against BYU – extending their drought without a bowl game victory to 21 years. Not only did they lose, but they were crushed 36-14. Fortunately, the loss won’t affect the high draft stock of Colorado’s two superstars: Heisman winnerTravis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Shedeur and Deion’s Draft Competition
Quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are the favorites to go to the Tennessee Titans, who hold the first overall pick. Whoever doesn’t go first will likely go second or third overall, as both the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants are in desperate need of quarterbacks for next season. Deshaun Watson is expected to miss the 2025 season due to his injury from this season, and the Giants officially ended the Daniel Jones experiment this year. What’s certain is that Shedeur will be drafted higher than his father, Deion, who was selected fifth overall in the 1989 NFL Draft.
Coach Prime recently spoke about this friendly competition with his son on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast, reflecting on what it means to him. “He has this quiet competition going on. His goal was to be drafted higher than me, and he’s going to eclipse that. I was the fifth pick. Yeah, he’s going before five.” It’s worth noting that Deion was selected fifth not because of a lack of talent, but because teams typically address their most pressing needs first in the draft. Interestingly, four of the top five players taken in the 1989 draft are now Hall of Famers: Troy Aikman (1st), Barry Sanders (3rd), Derrick Thomas (4th), and Deion Sanders. The definition of a draft class for the ages.
Shedeur Won’t Go to Just Any Team
I like the internal and quiet competition within the Sanders family, although on the surface it’s hard to imagine Shedeur surpassing his father’s career. As a quarterback, however, he’ll have more opportunities to stand out, but much will depend on which team drafts him. Deion has openly said he won’t let his son go to just any franchise, as a young player’s success in the NFL often depends on how well the organization is run.
For example, the Titans are currently without a general manager and will have a head coach entering his second season. Meanwhile, the Browns have been a quarterback graveyard since 1999. Between then and the end of the 2024 season, the team has had 40 different starting quarterbacks! with only three seasons (2001 with Tim Couch, 2019 and 2020 with Baker Mayfield) featuring the same starter for every game. That statistic probably doesn’t sit well with the Sanders family. If Cam Ward ends up going to the Titans, it’s highly likely that Shedeur will end up with the New York Giants – a solid team that desperately needs a quarterback to compete in a tough NFC East that features both the Eagles and Commanders in the divisional round this year.
