LaLiga and Getafe have decided to reopen a path which, up until now, appeared to have been closed off for Spanish soccer after an alleged incident concerning Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham and Mason Greenwood.
They are set to defy an unwritten law that is respected by the clubs, which aims not to denounce what the referee reports in their match debrief, after a written statement was presented by league officials in relation to what happened between Bellingham and Greenwood.
It is alleged that the incident took place in the match between Getafe and Real Madrid, with Bellingham accused of indirectly insulting his compatriot.
The unwritten pact meant that whatever happened on the pitch stayed there, as long as the referee didn’t see it or report it. Fair or not, that was what prevailed and apart from in special cases, as what happened between Mouctar Diakhaby and Juan Cala in 2022-23, everything was limited to what the referee wrote in their report.

What happens next?
Once the written statement has been submitted, the first thing that LaLiga does is to appoint an investigating judge, who collects information on what happened and all parties will be called to give their side of the story.
The ball is now in the court of the in what they consider to be a situation worthy of being sanctioned. In a couple of weeks, without a fixed deadline, there will be a proposal for either a punishment or dismissal of the case.
From then on, those involved will have 10 working days to present the allegations, which will be submitted to the Committee for a decision. With this, there will be no news about a possible sanction for Bellingham until March at the earliest.
Reaction from both teams
The truth is that the Federation are very surprised by the move made by LaLiga at the request of Getafe. It is not a normal request due to the fact the incident was not mentioned in the referee’s report.
Real Madrid have the same feeling and believe it is strange that an insult from one player to another has been taken into account to be sanctioned. The situation could amount to several complaints on every matchday and the LaLiga EA SPORTS leaders consider it to be harmful to soccer.
It is claimed that Greenwood, 22, did not want action to be taken against Bellingham, 20. He was surprised at the time by Getafe’s actions and is seemingly not involved in the situation.
