In his memoir Source Code, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates provides an eye-opening account of his transformative years at Harvard. Gates, now 69, reflected on his rebellious tendencies, near-expulsion, and the experiences that paved the way for his future success.
Gates enrolled at Harvard in 1975 and quickly became engrossed in developing what would later become Microsoft software.
His relentless dedication to the Aiken Computation Laboratory-logging an astonishing 711 hours there in February alone-sparked concern. A university associate director labeled him a “wise-ass,” noting that Gates seemed “unimpressed” by warnings about his actions.
“Perhaps I was. My ability to filter reactions wasn’t highly developed back then,” Gates wrote.
His rule-breaking almost landed him in serious trouble, but Gates credited his father for helping him navigate the fallout by posing critical questions about the lab’s policies and their enforcement.
