It has been 233 years since the ratification of the Bill of Rights. The aim is to give freedom and justice to all Americans, marking a turning point for the country.
The amendments were introduced to lay the foundations and gradually create a healthy democracy. It is important for citizens to know their rights in any situation that may arise.
These are the 10 amendments of the Bill of Rights
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Second Amendment: Right to Bear Arms
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Amendment 3: Quartering of Soldiers
No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Fourth Amendment: Search and arrest
The Fourth Amendment prevents the government from arbitrarily searching or seizing a person or their private property.
Amendment V: Rights in criminal cases
No one can be compelled to answer for a serious crime without a formal indictment by a jury, except in military circumstances during times of war or public danger.
In addition, no one can be tried twice for the same crime, forced to testify against himself, or deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. Nor can private property be taken for public use without just compensation.
Sixth Amendment: Right to a fair trial
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall have the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury, to be informed of the charge, to confront the witnesses against him, to obtain witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.
Seventh Amendment: Civil cases
In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
Eighth Amendment: Bail, fines and punishment
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
Ninth Amendment: Rights reserved to the people
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
10th Amendment: State rights
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
