The Boston Celtics have built themselves a superteam, winning an NBA Finals the year they constructed it. However, according to former Celtics All-Star Kyrie Irving, there was a chance that a superteam would have been bought instead of mostly built, via Tim Botemps. Irving said back in 2018, he planned on recruiting Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis to form a super team with himself and a young Jayson Tatum.
“We all had that vision to play together in Boston. Danny Ainge had a large responsibility in that, trying to make it happen, make sure I stayed in Boston…But yeah, in 2018, it was a dream for Kyrie, AD, KD to be on one team and still keep JT and let him grow and then see how it goes.”
Instead of that happening, Irving stayed on the Celtics with Tatum for another year, until leaving in the 2019 offseason. The most he did in his career was make it to game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals in 2018 against the Cleveland Cavaliers led by a prime LeBron James.
The Celtics ended up building their team to win a championship years later, but it’s nice to think about what could have been with a bunch of stars in their prime uniting in Boston.
