Despite throwing more interceptions this season and posting what many would call “ordinary” numbers-under 4,000 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions-Mahomes continues to deliver when it matters most.
The Chiefs finished their season 15-2, their best record yet, and much of that success is owed to Mahomes’ ability to rise to the occasion in tight games. As Jon Gruden noted, “Pat Mahomes has brought this team back times to win this year. Adversity doesn’t bother him.”

In Week 2 against the Bengals, he orchestrated a late drive that set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning 51-yard field goal in a thrilling 26-25 finish. Against the Chargers in Week 4, Mahomes threw a decisive touchdown in the final minutes to secure a 17-10 victory.
Gruden highlights Mahomes’ resilience
The Chiefs’ resilience was on full display in Week 10 against the Broncos. Trailing 3-14, Mahomes led a comeback, with Butker once again nailing a key field goal and the defense shutting out Denver’s offense in the second half to win 16-14. Similar scenarios played out in games against the Panthers, Broncos, and Chargers.
These weren’t just lucky breaks; Kansas City has been dominant on third downs, converting 101 of 194 opportunities to sustain drives. Gruden summed it up perfectly: “The battery of Mahomes and Reid and the emerging defense has allowed the Chiefs to do great things.“
While injuries plagued their defense, Steve Spagnuolo’s shift to aggressive press coverage helped them close out games. On offense, Mahomes rediscovered his chemistry with Travis Kelce after a slow start to the season. Kelce once again proved to be Mahomes’ go-to weapon, making crucial plays when they mattered most.
Now, as they prepare to face the Buffalo Bills in another AFC Championship game, history looms large. Though Buffalo has beaten Kansas City in the regular season, they remain winless against the Chiefs in playoff matchups. Whether this game will follow past patterns or break new ground remains to be seen.
