A major change is coming to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, with one sport being dropped from the lineup and its replacement already decided. As the 2024 Paris Olympics wrapped up on August 11, fans are already looking ahead to the next Games. Los Angeles, set to host the Olympics for the first time since 1984, will welcome back all the traditional sports.
However, breakdancing, which made its Olympic debut in Paris, won’t be featured in the 2028 Games. Despite its introduction this summer, the decision to exclude breaking from the next Olympics was made prior to the Paris event.
Breaking debuted on August 9 with the B-girls competition, followed by the B-boys event. Japan and Canada took home the top honors in these categories.
The sport’s inclusion sparked some controversy, especially after Australian competitor Rachael Gunn‘s unique routine, which became a talking point on social media.
Following her performance, which didn’t earn her any points, Gunn expressed her disappointment over breaking’s exclusion from the 2028 Games.
Replacing breakdancing in Los Angeles will be cricket, returning to the Olympics after a 128-year absence. The sport, last seen at the Olympics in 1900, will be played in a Twenty20 format.
The breakdancing community remains hopeful that the sport could make a comeback at the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia.

In addition to cricket, baseball, softball, and lacrosse will rejoin the Olympic program after being absent in recent years. The 2028 Games will also introduce new sports, including flag football and squash.
Skateboarding and speed climbing, which were introduced as optional events in recent Olympics, will become permanent fixtures starting in Los Angeles.
