In early 2021, the Chiefs were focused on playing in Super Bowl 55. Kansas City had won the Super Bowl in 2020 and were looking to go back-to-back with a win over the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers in 2021.
A few days before the Super Bowl, Chiefs linebackers coach Britt Reid was involved in a car accident. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol, and the crash resulted in two young children suffering injuries. Reid is the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Britt was part of the Kansas City staff starting in 2013, but this accident caused the team not to renew his contract.

Britt Reid car accident
Reid drove into two parked cars near Kansas City, Missouri’s Chiefs’ training complex. He admitted to responding officers that he had two or three drinks earlier and was taking Adderall. When tested, Reid had a blood alcohol level of 0.113, over the legal limit of 0.08.
The accident caused not only Reid to be hospitalized but also a five-year-old kid. The child was in critical condition and was in a coma for 10 days. Two months later, the child was released from the hospital, but she couldn’t walk or talk and had to be fed through a feeding tube. The Chiefs announced they would pay for all of the hospital-related expenses.

Britt Reid prison sentence
Initially, Reid was charged with a DWI, which is a class-D felony in the state of Missouri. The maximum sentence for this type of charge is seven years in prison.
Reid pleaded guilty to the charge as part of a plea deal in September 2022, over a year and a half after the incident. The plea was for a sentence ranging from probation to a four-year prison stint. Reid was officially sentenced to three years in prison on Nov. 1, 2022.
Only four months later, Missouri Governor Mike Parson commuted Reid’s sentence, allowing the former coach to service it under house arrest. His sentence will end on Oct. 31, 2025.
