However, a few days later, it was confirmed that McCarthy was free to leave the Cowboys, signaling the end of his tenure in Dallas.
While Bill Belichick was once a rumored candidate, he has since signed a five-year deal to coach at the University of North Carolina, making him unavailable for any potential job offers until after June 1st.

With Belichick out of the picture, Jones now has his sights set on a fresh and exciting candidate in Deion Sanders.
The current University of Colorado head coach has reportedly been in talks with Jones about the possibility of taking over the Cowboys.
Sanders, who played for the Cowboys between 1995 and 1999 and won a Super Bowl with the team, would be an intriguing choice for Jones, who is eager to make a change.
FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz confirmed that Jones had already spoken with Sanders, considering him a top candidate for the position.

While Sanders has expressed a strong connection to Colorado and its community, he has also made it clear that coaching in the NFL would only be considered if it involved coaching his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, at the next level.
“You know what? The only way I would consider it [coaching in the NFL] is to coach my sons,” Sanders told Good Morning America 3.
If Sanders is adamant about coaching his sons, this could have significant implications for the Cowboys, particularly in terms of their quarterback situation.
The team currently has Dak Prescott, who has been their franchise quarterback since 2016, but a coaching change under Sanders could lead to a major shift in personnel.
Prescott, who signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension in 2024, has been inconsistent in the playoffs, with a 2-5 postseason record. If Sanders were to take the job, it could lead to a trade of Prescott, paving the way for Shedeur Sanders to be drafted by the Cowboys.
