Steve Bruce has left his post as manager of Hull City.
The 55-year-old had been at the helm since June 2012, earning promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge and again with a Championship play-off final victory over Sheffield Wednesday in May 2016.
“Following four incredible seasons with the Tigers including two promotions and our first ever FA Cup final, we can confirm that manager Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent,” read a statement on the hullcitytigers.com.
“The Board of Directors would like to thank Steve for all his efforts since his appointment in 2012 culminating in a glorious day at Wembley in May which saw the club bounce back into the Premier League. Steve has excelled in his role – both on and off the field – and will be remembered for being the most successful manager in our history to date.
“Steve Bruce wishes the club and the owners all the very best for the forthcoming Premier League season.
“Steve also wishes to place on record his thanks to the club’s supporters for their unwavering support and also to all the players and staff who have worked with him during his time at the KCOM Stadium.”
The club also announced that Mike Phelan will act as caretaker manager until a permanent appointment is made.
During his time with the Tigers in the top-flight, Bruce led his side to a 16th-place finish and the FA Cup final in 2013/14, before suffering relegation.
Bruce has been manager for 392 Premier League matches at four different clubs, also taking charge of Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland.
Prior to that, he enjoyed a successful playing career as a central defender, winning three Premier League titles as captain of Manchester United, in 1992/93, 1993/94 and 1995/96.
Hull are next in pre-season action on Saturday when they face Scunthorpe United at Glanforth Park.
Their first fixture of the new Premier League season will be a home encounter with Leicester City, the Premier League champions, on Saturday 13 August, kick-off at 12.30pm.
