American motorsports has just suffered a painful loss. NASCAR legend Martin Truex Sr. passed away this Friday, January 17, at the age of 66. The former racer left behind a legacy that is difficult to surpass, starting with his two sons, Martin Jr. and Ryan, both champions in different NASCAR categories.
Truex Sr. spent most of his career in the Busch North Series, which was also where he obtained his best results. A seventh place overall in 1994 and a tenth in 1998 are among the most outstanding results of the patriarch of the Truex dynasty in this division.
The former racer was active for ten years and began a gradual retirement in the late 90s to promote the career of his eldest son, Martin Jr. After his final retirement, he started a wholesale seafood business, leveraging connections with sponsors during his NASCAR career.
Truex Sr.: A gentleman of the track
In a statement released today, his children said, “We are devastated by the loss of our father. Simply put, he was our hero and a great man. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and ask for privacy at this time.”
Martin Truex Sr. is survived by his daughter, Marsha McVey, and sons Martin Jr. and Ryan. Martin was the NASCAR Cup Series champion in 2017 and the regular season champion at this same circuit in 2017 and 2023. Ryan was the Camping World East Series champion in 2009 and the K&N Pro Series East in 2010.
One of his great rivals at Busch North, Andy Santerre, said in an interview last September, “He was a gentleman racer, fun to race with. I don’t remember all my races, but I do remember that Martin Sr. beat me at New Hampshire in, I think, ’94, and I finished second and I was happy for him.”
An unforgettable legacy
The NASCAR community was quick to send its condolences to the family. Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote via X (formerly Twitter), “He was a great man.” James Small, crew chief for Joe Gibbs Racing, wrote, “He was always the life of the party and an absolute champion of a bloke.”
One fan echoed the sentiment, saying, “That’s so sad! My prayers are with Martin Jr. and the family.” Another noted, “RIP to a legend. My prayers are with Martin Jr., he’s had a lot of loss lately,” the latter referring to the passing of Sherry Pollex, Truex Jr.’s girlfriend, in 2023 from ovarian cancer.
While the NASCAR family mourns the passing of one of its legends, fans are left with the memory of his time on the track and the stories of his exploits.
