On Monday, Jan. 20, two key events will captivate both the United States of America and the rest of the world.
On one hand, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the president of the United States for a second time. On the other, Notre Dame and Ohio State will battle it out in the College Football Playoff Championship Game.
For the most part, politics and the world of sports don’t have much overlap. Today, the two worlds are colliding.
During C-SPAN’s coverage of the presidential inauguration, the broadcast was taking callers to discuss the inauguration and the future of America’s political climate. One caller couldn’t help themselves and took a moment to discuss college football.
C-SPAN caller criticizes College Football Playoff committee
C-SPAN, which stands for “Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network”, is a non-profit broadcast network that primarily televises the proceedings of the federal government. Some would describe a presidential inauguration of this magnitude as their Super Bowl.
Throughout the program, the hosts were taking live calls from the public to share their opinions on the inauguration and other political matters.
One caller strayed from the norm and utilized their air time to briefly discuss politics before shifting to college football.

The caller was critical of the CFP committee’s choice to leave Alabama out of the playoff in favor of schools like SMU and Indiana.
“I’m disappointed in how the election turned out,” he begins. “I think it would’ve been great to see a female president get inaugurated today. While I’m disappointed in the American people and their desire to see four more years of Trump, I’m a bit more disappointed in the selection committee for not picking Alabama for the College Football Playoff finals. Accepting inferior teams like SMU and Indiana?”
“Truly dark times in America,” the caller said before being swiftly cut off by the program’s producers.
Even in the midst of a significant political event, SEC supporters are going to find a way to voice their displeasure with the committee.
