Unionized Costco workers in the United States have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a nationwide strike due to disagreements in negotiations over their labor contract, which expires on January 31, 2025, Reuters reported.
Eighty-five percent of Teamsters union members, representing more than 18,000 Costco employees, supported the move.
What are the labor demands on Costco?
The main demands of the workers include wage increases, improvements in benefits such as pensions, job security, seniority pay, paid family leave and bereavement policies. The union has emphasized that they will not work beyond January 31 without a contract they consider fair and industry-leading.
Costco has stated that it is committed to a fair bargaining process and that its operations will not be materially affected by a possible strike. However, it has so far not acceded to the union’s demands, leading to the current tense situation.
When would the strike at Costco break out?
If negotiations between Costco and the Teamsters union fail, the strike would begin on February 1, 2025, immediately after the current contract expires on January 31, 2025.
This would mean that unionized workers would stop working just at the beginning of February, unless a last-minute agreement is reached.
The union made it clear that its members will not work after February 1 without a contract that meets their demands.
This could cause disruptions at affected warehouses, especially in states such as California and New York, where a large portion of the unionized workforce is concentrated.
The strike could affect 56 Costco warehouses in five states, representing about 8% of the company’s US workforce.
