NASA’s striking discovery in the universe. The agency’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered a planet that is disintegrating very quickly, something that has never been seen before and is therefore doomed to disappear completely. Nick Tusay, leader of the study, spoke about it in a statement
Why is this planet disintegrating so quickly?
The discovery of this phenomenon was made possible by the joint work of a team of astronomers from MIT and another from the University of Pennsylvania. The disintegrating exoplanet is called BD+05 4868 Ab and orbits a star called BD+05 4868, which is about 141 light years away, making that particular exoplanet the closest disintegrating world ever seen.
The two teams intend to join forces and train the powerful infrared eye of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) on BD+05 4868 Ab to learn more about this.
According to this study, this planet has the most prominent dust tails to date, being gigantic with a length of about 9 million kilometers (5.6 million miles), surrounding more than half of the planet’s orbit around the star every 30 and a half hours. Its tail is so dense and large that when it crosses the face of its star, it blocks 1% of its light, affecting the transit signal for 15 hours

Nick Tusay, the study leader, said in a statement: “These planets are literally spilling their guts into space for us, and with JWST, we finally have the means to study their composition and see what planets orbiting other stars are really made of.” He also described this phenomenon as key to astronomy: “It’s unique to understanding the interiors of terrestrial planets.”
Finally, Marc Hon, co-author of the study, revealed how lucky they are to see this: “The rate at which the planet is evaporating is absolutely cataclysmic and we are incredibly lucky to be witnessing the final hours of this dying planet. This may be a benchmark for future studies of the disintegration of such systems.”
