A major plus is how student loans contribute to your credit mix. Credit mix-variety in the types of credit you manage-accounts for 10% of your credit score. Having an installment loan like student debt, alongside revolving credit (like a credit card), demonstrates to lenders your ability to handle diverse types of debt responsibly.
More importantly, making on-time payments can significantly boost your score. Payment history is the most critical factor, accounting for 35% of your credit score. If you consistently pay on time, your student loans become a positive mark on your credit history.
Potential downsides
However, the flip side is equally impactful. Missing payments or defaulting on student loans can harm your credit. “Any delinquent account that appears on your credit report can have a noticeable and negative impact on your score,” explains Bruce McClary, spokesperson for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).
Federal loans offer some leeway-payments are typically reported as delinquent only after 90 days. Private loans, however, may follow stricter timelines, with late payments potentially reported sooner. Worse yet, defaulting (270+ days overdue for federal loans) can haunt your credit report for seven years.
Student loans can also influence your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio, a factor lenders consider for major loans like mortgages. High student debt can raise your DTI, making it tougher to qualify for additional credit.
Stay proactive
If you’re struggling to make payments, contact your loan servicer. Federal loans often offer options like income-driven repayment plans or temporary forbearance. Missing payments without a plan can lead to collections or wage garnishment, especially for borrowers already in default.
Finally, keep an eye on your credit report. Errors, like inflated loan balances, can lower your score. “File a dispute if you spot inaccuracies,” suggests McClary, adding that tools like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau can assist with complaints. In short, manage your student loans carefully, and they’ll work for your credit score-not against it.
