Former film producer Harvey Weinstein is facing a new trial in New York, specifically on April 15 in Manhattan. However, his legal team has asked the judge to bring the date forward, as his delicate health could mean that he does not arrive at that time in adequate condition to testify.
Why is Harvey Weinstein convicted?
Harvey was sentenced in 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault, but his legal situation became more complicated when his conviction was overturned in April 2024, and he now faces new charges for new sexual offences he committed in 2006 and 2013, all of which will be consolidated into a single trial.
His health has worsened since he has been in Rikers Island prison, as a month ago, in December 2024, he had to be taken to Manhattan hospital for health complications arising from chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes, something that has made his defense insist that he testify earlier.
The court has also denied the defense’s motion to dismiss the new indictment against him on the aforementioned sex charges. If convicted, he could face 25 years in prison.
Weinstein visibly affected
In a recent hearing, Harvey appeared in a wheelchair, declaring before the court, totally desperate: “I’m in an emergency situation, I beg you to move the date. I need to get out of this hellhole as soon as possible. The prison I’m in is in medieval conditions and many inmates are in similar situations.”
Despite this request, the judge said that his schedule is already occupied with another trial on this scheduled date and that it cannot be brought forward, but he promised to evaluate the development of the health of this and the case to make a final decision.
