The United States women’s national soccer team lost to Mexico 2-0 on Monday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in the third and final game of the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup group stage. “El Tri” has now defeated the USWNT twice in 43 games, the first time in 14 years.
Mexico’s Lizbeth Ovalle opened the score in the 37th minute when she lobbed it over the American goalkeeper with a shot reminiscent of when Giovanni Dos Santos scored the game-winner on Tim Howard in the 2011 Gold Cup Final.
Before the end of the first half, the Mexican team had another important and clear scoring chance in the 48th minute, but Karla Nieto‘s long-range shot hit the crossbar.
Despite being ahead on the scoreboard, Mexico continued to dominate in the second half as USWNT forward Trinity Rodman missed several chances to equalize.
Mayra Pelayo secures win for Mexico
Mayra Pelayo made an immediate impact for Mexico when she was subbed on late in the second half. Her first shot hit the post, but managed to seal the victory with a screamer in crunchtime.
With this result, the Mexican team advances first in its group with seven points, while the United States move forward in second place of Group A.
Argentina and the Dominican Republic are eliminated from the tournament. Mexico and USWNT await their opponents.
