The college football national championship represents the pinnacle of achievement for NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs.

Over the years, the format for determining the best team in college football has evolved significantly. From early selections by various organizations to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) era, and now the College Football Playoff (CFP), each era has crowned champions who etched their names into history.

The evolution of the National Championship

Prior to 2014, national champions were often determined by polls or other selection committees, leading to occasional disputes and shared titles when no clear No. 1 emerged.

The BCS system, introduced in 1998, attempted to address this by pitting the top two ranked teams in a single title game.

However, the BCS era gave way to the College Football Playoff starting with the 2014 season, ushering in a new and more competitive format.

The CFP introduced a four-team playoff system where the top four ranked programs face off in semifinals hosted by major bowl games.

The winners then advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, a standalone game that determines the ultimate champion.

The winners of the semifinals will then meet in January for the College Football Playoff National Championship, continuing the tradition of crowning the best team in college football.

NCAA football champions throughout history

From the early days of shared titles to the definitive championships of the modern era, college football’s storied history is filled with legendary teams, unforgettable moments, and powerhouse programs that dominated the sport.
