Roland Garros, the second ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, starts this Sunday, May 28 and will be played until June 11, once the preliminary round is held this week. The daytime and evening sessions will start on Monday, May 29 and will continue until Wednesday, June 7. The day session starts at 11.00 a.m. and the evening session at 8.30 p.m. with a single match on the Philippe Chatrier center court. The finals, both men’s and women’s, will start at 3 p.m.
With the absence of Rafa Nadal, the tournament will know a different winner than last year. Carlos Alcaraz, ATP no.1, Daniil Medvedev, no.2, Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, among others, are looking for the Musketeers’ Cup. In the women’s draw, Paula Badosa leads the Spanish options in a draw with Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula or Elena Rybakina, among others.
Roland Garros 2023 will distribute 49.6 million euros among the tennis players, which is 12.3pc more than last year, with more significant increases in the first rounds and in parallel competitions such as wheelchair, organizers said.
How much money does the winner of Roland Garros make?
The players who lift the trophy on the weekend of June 10 and 11, the days of the men’s and women’s singles finals, respectively, will pocket 2.3 million euros each, 100,000 euros more than last year’s winners, Iga Swiatek of Poland and Rafael Nadal.
The finalists will pocket half of that prize, while for reaching the semifinals the endowment will be 630,000 euros, 30,000 more than in 2022. The quarterfinals will be paid with 400,000 euros and the eighth with 240,000 euros, in both cases 20,000 euros more than in the last edition.
The biggest increase, of between 11 and 13pc, is in the first three rounds, with 69,000 euros for falling in the debut (+7,000 euros), 97,000 in the second (+11,000) and 142,000 for reaching the third (+16,200).
The prizes for the qualifying round have also increased significantly, by 11.8pc. Participating in the qualifying round guarantees 16,000 euros (+2,000 euros), winning the first match 22,000 (+2,000) and falling in the third 34,000 (+3,000).
The winners of the doubles tournaments will pocket 590,000 euros, 10,000 more, and the finalists 295,000, 5,000 more, while the prizes for mixed doubles are repeated, 122,000 for the winner and 61,000 for the finalist.
The largest increase will take place in the wheelchair category, which will distribute 810,000 euros, 40pc more, with 60,000 euros for the individual winner and 20,000 for the doubles pair.
