San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle did a 180-degree turn in his diet philosophy, from “eat whatever you want” to “let’s be smart about it.”
In a recent interview, the Iowa Hawkeyes graduate highlighted how his eating habits have evolved since he was a kid. “My dad was big into getting calories and protein in you,”Kittle stated, recalling that he was small and undersized when he was a child.
Luckily for him, while his dad was somewhat of a meat lover, his mom was a vegetarian, so he had a much-needed balance while growing up. “I’d eat steak or burgers, and I’d do pasta and veggies another night. I preferred meat, but I enjoyed my mom’s cooking as well,”Kittle said.
However, now everyone in his family is vegetarian, even his dad. Although they do not push their beliefs on him, he acknowledges that it is good for him to have some options.
“Now, my dad’s big on ‘Red meat is not the right way to eat.’ I used to have it every meal. Now I do not,”the tight end admits.
Kittle is not a big fan of a vegan diet
“I’ve done three vegan meals for three days in a row-I’m not a fan of it. I enjoy meat,” he admits.
Though the 49ers tight end recognizes that meat is not always the healthiest choice, he tries to be smarter about it.
“I don’t go to Walmart and just buy the five-dollar beef. Nothing against people who do, but I try to go for higher-quality meat. Every chef I’ve had goes to a farm or farmer’s market,” he explained.
Kittle’s favorite meats are chicken and steak“as clean as it gets.” That way, he thinks, he can prolong his career while feeling as good as possible.

George Kittle counts on his family’s support
Besides his parents and sibling, George has his wife’s, Claire Kittle, support on his diet. “She does a really good job calling me on my bullshit. She’s, like, hey, do you need dessert three nights in a row?”
Although Claire“loves pasta and wine,” she also keeps reminding him what his goals are, diet-wise, and that he does not have to always be eating unhealthy foods.
Other than that, the Kittles have hired a chef to take care of all their cooking. “I’m super busy, and I have to eat a lot of calories, to eat clean, and I don’t want to spend the time to do it myself.”
He does not want his wife to do it either, so “hiring a chef was a no-brainer for us. We’ve had a chef for two years now, and we’ve found someone who’s done a great job.”
