Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin hasn’t stepped into a ring since the fight that closed the trilogy with Canelo Alvarez in September 2022 and, to be honest, it looks like he won’t do it again, as he has been named president of the Kazakhstan Olympic Committee.
Although he has never announced his retirement from the sport, the fact that he was unanimously elected to such a representative position is an indication that the middleweight king will not have the time required to continue his career at the age of 41.
And what a career it was. Over 45 professional fights he has never been knocked out or even knocked down and the number is even more absurd if we consider his amateur career. Perhaps the best iron chin in boxing history, he has never been seriously hurt in 395 fights.

Golovkin, who is about to turn 42, replaces businessman Timur Kulibayev as head of his country’s Olympic organization. It is worth remembering that as an amateur, ‘GGG’ achieved an incredible record of 345-5, winning the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games and the gold medal at the 2003 Bangkok World Championships, among many other titles.
Has GGG retired?
As a pro, GGG went on to hold the WBC, IBF and WBA belts before drawing to Canelo Alvarez on the scorecards although many will tell you he won the bout in the eyes of the fans. He then met the Mexican again in 2018 and lost via majority decision, but again people will tell you he won that bout too.
Finally, the second loss of his career in his most recent fight came in the trilogy against Canelo. He lost via unanimous decision in the super-middleweight class 116-112, 115-113, 115-133. The fact that, at 40, he pushed the most feared boxer in his prime to a narrow win shows how good he actually was.
After his fight against Canelo at super middleweight, the IBF decreed that Golovkin should defend his middleweight title against Esquiva Falcao last year, a demand that the Kazakhstani did not heed and was therefore stripped of the belt.
And then the WBA then ordered him to defend his belt against Erislandy Lara, and again, he turned a deaf ear allowing the belt to be taken away from him. In view of this picture, it was expected that one of the greatest fighters of this century would announce his retirement sooner rather than later, although the announcement has never officially come.
