The stunning Orionid meteor shower is made up of dust and debris left in the wake of Halley’s Comet.
As the comet travels through space, it leaves behind ice and dust, creating brilliant trails of debris that can last for several seconds or even minutes.
If these fragments travel fast enough, they can produce fireballs, which appear as extended bursts of light, creating a spectacular display in the night sky.
The Orionid meteor shower is considered one of the fastest meteor showers because Earth nearly collides head-on with the stream of particles left by Halley’s Comet.
When Will Halley’s Comet Be Visible From Earth Again?
Halley’s Comet is currently about halfway through its orbit around the Sun, a journey that takes approximately 76 years.
The comet reached the farthest point of its orbit from the Sun in December 2023.
Halley was last visible to the naked eye from Earth in 1986, and it won’t return until 2061, 37 years from now.
“Halley is known as the most famous comet because it was the first time astronomers realized that comets could be repeat visitors to our night skies,” NASA explained.
“Astronomers have now linked sightings of the comet to observations dating back more than 2,000 years.”
Halley‘s last visit to Earth’s skies in 1986 was greeted by an international fleet of spacecraft. It will make its return in 2061 as part of its regular 76-year journey around the Sun.
The History of Halley’s Comet
Until the time of English astronomer Edmond Halley (1656-1742), it was believed that comets only passed through the solar system once.
But in 1705, Halley used Isaac Newton‘s theories of gravity and planetary motion to calculate the orbits of several comets.
Halley noticed similarities in the orbits of bright comets reported in 1531, 1607, and 1682, and suggested that these were actually sightings of the same comet making repeated returns.
He correctly predicted that the comet would reappear in 1758, and later the first known “periodic” comet was named Halley’s Comet in his honor.
Since then, Halley’s Comet has been linked to ancient observations dating back more than 2,000 years.
It even appears in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
