James Earl Jones, who is regarded among the world’s greatest stage and screen actors, died on Monday.
Earl Jones“passed away this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York surrounded by family,” his representative shared in a statement. No cause of death was immediately offered.

“I wanted to make Darth Vader more interesting, more subtle, more psychologically oriented,” he explained, but director George Lucas preferred a different approach, keeping Vader’s voice “on a very narrow band of inflection, ’cause he ain’t human.”

He was the commanding presence behind the regal Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King and lent his distinctive voice to major brands like CNN and Verizon.
