New Zealand’s Israel Adesanya will look to reclaim his middleweight championship against South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis in Saturday’s UFC main event bout at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
Adesanya has been out of the octagon for almost a year after losing the belt to Sean Strickland by unanimous decision in September 2023 and his next fight involves a more personal feeling than just being middleweight champion for the third time in his career, because of the rivalry that has been generated against Du Plessis.
“Beating Dricus is more important to me than regaining the title. This fight is about history and proving something,” Adesanya said while appearing on UFC 305 Countdown.
It will be the first time two African-born fighters will face off for a UFC championship. Dricus du Plessis (21-2-0) will look to extend his nine-fight winning streak with his first title defense against a New Zealand-born Israel Adesanya (24-3-0), who was born in Nigeria.
