Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is a big supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team as he proudly represents being Akron’s own hero.
The NBA icon is a regular to the Buckeyes‘ games during the regular season and whenever he can, he makes his way to Ohio State’s playoff games, such as the College Football Playoff National Championship that was played this Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Although he did not attended the university, James has a deep bond with Ohio State, likely due to his plethora of connections to the state. He played high school basketball at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron and was selected No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003. After he departed to the Miami Heat, James returned to Cleveland and finally got an NBA championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.
LeBron James gives the key to Ohio State’s victory
Before the game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, LeBron James posted a video on X where he gave away the keys to his team’s victory over the Indiana squad.
“Today’s keys to the game is making no mistakes, you have to win on all three sides of the ball, offense, defense and special teams. We take care of business that way, we win the game. Final score of the game, I got Ohio State 38, Notre Dame 17, let’s go!”, James stated.

LeBron could have played football for Ohio State
LeBron James has been open about the fact that he thought about giving football a chance, both at the college and professional level. During an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast “New Heights”, the NBA icon revealed he has “absolutely” considered what an NFL career would be like for him, and even seriously considered a switch from the NBA at one point.
As to whether he ever seriously thought about giving it a shot, James says, “The only time I’ve really taken it super duper serious, I think it was 2011 when we had the NBA lockout. And I didn’t know when we were going to make the deal with the owners and get our league back going. So I actually thought about it a little bit back then. I was still young enough to get out there with y’all, but that’s the only time I’ve actually seriously considered it.”

James definitely could have had a shot at the NFL if he wanted. At the time, he was one of the best wide receivers in Ohio, and was even recruited to play both sports at OSU (among overtures from other schools).
“I would have definitely thought about that,” James said. “My best friend at the time Sian Cotton went off to Ohio State on a full ride and played for Ohio State football, so that would’ve been super dope. I could’ve roomed with him, played football during the fall, and basketball during the winter and spring. That would’ve been dope.”
