World No.1 Jannik Sinner chalked up his 17th successive victory to complete a solid first week at Melbourne Park with a comfortable win over American Marcos Giron on Saturday.

The Italian showed enough quality when it mattered to beat the world No.46 6-3 6-4 6-2 to move into the last 16.

The reigning Australian Open and US Open champion can prepare for a meeting with either 13th seed Holger Rune or Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday.

Having lost his first set since October to Aussie wildcard Tristan Schoolkate in the previous round, there were no such hiccups for Sinner on Saturday, as he clobbered 35 winners in just over two hours on court.

Giron will head home frustrated he was unable to convert only one of his seven break point chances, a key area when facing the best players in the sport.

“Every match has its own difficulties. I felt he was very solid from the back of the court and he served well, especially the first serve, I struggled a bit to return” Sinner told on-court interviewer Jim Courier.

“I still have room to improve, but in the other way every win is great especially in these kinds of conditions. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round.

“If I want to go on in this tournament, I have to improve. Hopefully in the next round I’m able to raise my level, but I’m still very happy.”

In their second career meeting after Sinner had beaten the Californian in Shanghai in 2023, the Italian started quickly by jumping to an immediate 3-0 lead.

Although Giron generally gave a good account of himself, it felt like Sinner had his opponent at arm’s length, and that was the story of the opening set.

The only opportunity the American had was when a break point popped up with Sinner serving at 5-4, but it disappeared in a flash and the set was done.

Giron did a better job of staying with Sinner early in the second, but it appeared a matter of time before the top seed’s pressure paid off.

This time, Sinner struck in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead.

Again, Giron engineered a half-chance when Sinner served for the set but was powerless to stop him quickly recovering from 0-30 to put himself a set away from the fourth round.

The third began with a flurry of breaks. Sinner struck first before losing his focus to allow Giron to level at 2-2, but the favourite quickly re-established his advantage to take Giron’s serve yet again to switch ends 3-2 in front.

That passage of play effectively ended the contest as Sinner raced through the remainder of the third set, finishing the job without much more fuss to book a spot in the second week at the AO for the fourth time in his career.
