The American John Romita Sr, one of the most legendary cartoonists of Spider-Man and the Marvel universe, died early on Wednesday morning at the age of 93.
The American cartoonist was co-creator of legendary characters such as Wolverine, Kingpin, Mary Jane Watson and The Punisher and was a member of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame since 2002.
In his long career, John Romita Sr. held the position of art director at Marvel Comics, overseeing all of the company’s designs.
He retired in 1995 with his last work Spider-Man / Kingpin: to the Death, featuring Spider-Man, his best-known character, and Daredevil, his favourite character.
His son’s emotional farewell
His son, John Romita Jr., broke the news of his passing on his personal Twitter account: “I say this with a heavy heart, My father passed away peacefully in his sleep. He is a legend in the art world and it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps. Please keep your thoughts and condolences here out of respect for my family. He was the greatest man I ever met.”
