Gaga’s performance in the film is praised
In the review for The Hollywood Reporter, chief film critic David Rooney called the film “uneven” but praised Lady Gaga: “Gaga is a captivating, vivacious presence, splitting the difference between affinity and obsession, while giving Arthur a shot of joy and hope that makes him sing ‘When You’re Smiling’ on his way to court. Her musical numbers, both duets and solos, have a vitality that the film, often more austere, desperately needs.”

Lady Gaga played Harley Quinn in the first film and in an interview with Elle magazine, without directly mentioning the film, she said: “People sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And move on, even if something doesn’t connect in the way you intended.”
Gaga also said that failure or the fear of it should not be an obstacle for creators: “When that makes its way into your life, it can be difficult to control. It’s part of the chaos.”
