Ledisi, one of the best and most renowned rhythm & blues singers, achieved a new milestone in her career when she was chosen to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”prior to Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9. Ledisi’s career is marked by countless hits, which have also resulted in a very respectable net worth.
Ledisi Anibade Young was born in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After spending her childhood in Louisiana and her teenage years in California, Ledisi began her artistic career in 1990, in a local production of The Wiz. She studied opera and piano at the University of California, Berkeley, and in those years formed her funk band, “Anibade.”
In 2000, Ledisi released her debut album, “Soulsinger”, followed by “Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue” (2002), which won the Outstanding Jazz Album at the California Music Awards in 2003. In 2006, the singer and her band signed a contract with the Verve Forecast label with which they released Lost & Found, which reached number 10 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart.

Ledisi likes to control her destiny. When she failed to get a recording deal in 1999, the singer teamed up with keyboardist Sundra Manning to form their own label, LeSun Records. In 2014, she founded a production company called Ledhead Productions and in 2016, she created Fig Street Films.

The singer has released 11 studio albums, one EP, and one soundtrack album. Being a New Orleans native and with her long musical career, the NFL had no hesitation in calling her to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” popularly known as the Black national anthem, before Super Bowl LIX.
The game will be played on February 9 at the Super Dome in New Orleans and has special significance following the terrorist attack on New Year’s Day. Jon Batiste will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and Lauren Daigle and Trombone Shorty will perform “America the Beautiful.”
