Laila Ali, daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali, is a trailblazer in women’s boxing. From the start, she had to fight against the sexism in the sport while also overcoming the shadow of her famous father, known as “The Greatest”.
Over time, Laila built her own legacy as a world champion, and today she enjoys a successful career as a businesswoman. She is also an inspiration to women around the world.
In her early years in boxing, Laila carried high expectations because of her lineage. However, she managed to become a legend in her own right.
Aside from her career in the ring, she has found great success as an entrepreneur and has written her autobiography, where she shares how her strong family bonds helped her overcome obstacles in both sports and life.
In an interview with Essentially Sports, Laila Ali reflected on how she faced prejudice at the beginning of her career.
She recalled how people doubted her abilities, often seeing her as just “a pretty face” or “Muhammad Ali’s daughter,” thinking she was only in boxing for publicity.
“When I started fighting, everyone said: ‘Oh, she’s a pretty girl, oh, she’s Muhammad Ali’s daughter, oh, she can’t fight, oh, she’s just in it for publicity,'” Laila Ali shared.
In addition to boxing, Laila has explored other avenues, which she explained on the “High Performance” podcast, alongside Damien Hughes and Jake Humphrey.
During the interview, she reflected on how she overcame constant criticism of her talent and how people judged her more for her appearance and famous last name rather than her actual skills.
“I’m a strong girl, a confident girl, and I’m very ambitious. That means I’m going to work hard, be disciplined, and find the best trainers. Believe me, you wouldn’t want to face me in the ring,” Laila expressed.
Building her own legacy
Laila Ali began her boxing career at the age of 18 while already running a successful nail salon. Despite facing opposition from her father, who advised her against boxing due to the sport’s dangers, she pursued her passion.
Three years after her debut, she won her first world championship and, in 2004, became the WIBF light heavyweight champion.
On February 3, 2007, Laila Ali fought her last professional match, defeating Gwendolyn O’Neill in a rematch. However, her story didn’t end there.
After retiring from boxing, Laila found success in the entertainment industry and as a businesswoman, building a legacy beyond the ring.
