The football community has been in mourning after the passing of Manchester United great Denis Law at the age of 84. Widely regarded as one of the game’s greatest, the former Scotland striker leaves behind a legacy few can rival.
Law, the only Scottish player to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or, scored an astonishing 237 goals in 404 appearances for United. He remains third on the club’s all-time goal-scorers list.
Over a glittering career, Law also played for Huddersfield Town, Manchester City, and Torino, setting British transfer records three times.

In a heartfelt statement published via United’s website, the Law family said: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally, he is now at peace.”
They expressed gratitude for the love and support shown to Law throughout his life.

Tributes pour in from football legends for Denis Law
Manchester United legends and fans alike paid their respects. Bryan Robson, former United captain, called Law “a fantastic footballer and a fantastic man,” highlighting his generosity, humor, and iconic presence on the pitch.
“We have lost one of football’s giants both as a player and a gentleman,” Robson wrote. “Denis was more than just a fantastic footballer. He was a player so many of his peers idolized, and with good reason.”
Other tributes came from Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, and Paul Scholes, who referred to Law as “The King” — a reference to his nickname “King of the Stretford End”.
Meanwhile, former United striker Eric Cantona also shared a poignant tribute on Instagram, writing: “Rest in peace Denis. You were one of those who helped me feel at home in Manchester United. Thank you my friend!”
Law’s achievements include two First Division titles, an FA Cup, a European Cup, and two Charity Shields during his time at Old Trafford. Alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best, he formed what came to be known as the “United Trinity” — a trio of players who helped the team to great success in the years following the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.
United will honor him with black armbands and a minute’s silence before their match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.
