Gervonta Davis insists Issac Cruz was an easy fight as the 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion brutally shuts down talk the Mexican gave him the toughest fight of his illustrious career.
Dubbed Tank, Davis has won 30 fights and has 28 knockouts to his name; with only Cruz and German Meraz managing to avoid being put down in the ring, although he did beat both by unanimous decision.
Now as the question of who is the Olympic gold medallist’s trickiest rival from his last five bouts emerges, fans are quick to nominate the 26-year-old interim champion, Ryan Garcia, for the honor.
The Californian met Davis in the ring in 2023 but was knocked out in the seventh round via a body shot to cement his status as lightweight champion, before he defended his belts again against Frank Martin in June 2024.
However, Tank feels KingRy wasn’t much of a challenge for him and even named him his easiest foe to controversy; however, he also doesn’t want to hear any talk of Cruz either as he dismissed him too.
“Pit bull was cake walk too,” Davis posted to X.com, formerly Twitter, of Cruz.
Could Cruz rematch Davis?
The pair met in December 2021 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and although the 26-year-old got some good punches and combinations in, he was handed a 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 loss.
The scores actually suggest it was a close bout, and an impressive performance from Pit Bull as he took the fight on just two weeks’ notice and performed admirably at the very young age of 23 at the time.
Now far more seasoned, with an additional five bouts and a stint as super-lightweight champion, could Cruz push for a rematch? So far there is no news, but Davis insists he’ll beat him again.
“I’ll fight him again. I will stop him next time,” Davis posted to X.com in 2023. “And how can people say I lost this [fight], oh my god. I did a lot of [bulls**t] in this fight though for sure.”
