In 135 years of history, the Ohio State Buckeyes have won trophies by the dozen, but that doesn’t mean they’re satisfied with that. On Monday, January 20, the team will try to add another award to its cabinet when it faces the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the NCAA National Championship.
Since their inception in 1890, the Buckeyes have a record of 947 wins, 302 losses, and 53 ties, with a respectable record of 30-29 in college bowl games. This season, the team added two more awards to their stellar record, beating Oregon in the Rose Bowl and Texas in the Cotton Bowl on their way to the Natty.
With these two wins, the team got closer to winning its second national championship in the College Football Playoff (CFP) era, but one more in a history full of achievements that began in 1942 under the legendary Paul Brown.

Ohio State’s trophy case
Despite the convoluted history of NCAA rankings and championships, the Buckeyes have nine national championships. This includes six from the rankings era when AP and Coaches polls determined each year’s champion or champions, and one more from the Bowl Championship Series.
Ohio State won poll-era championships in 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, and 1970. In 2002, they won the BCS title by beating Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, and in 2014 and 2025 they won their firsts national championships of the CFP era.
Ryan Day’s big opportunity
Since his arrival in 2019, head coach Ryan Day has maintained the Buckeyes’ winning tradition. Day captured the Big Ten title twice in his first two years and has never failed to advance to the CFP.
This was Day’s chance to join his name with legends like Paul Brown, six-time championship winner Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel, and Urban Meyer. All is set for Ohio State to continue making history by beating Notre Dame on Monday.
