An income tax refund of up to $2,500 will be finalized for distribution to eligible Montana residents on December 31.
The income tax refunds are based on the 2021 tax returns of single or married filers, the Gazette notes.
To be eligible for this refund, a Montana taxpayer must have been a resident of the state for the entire 2021 tax year, and filed tax returns for 2020 and 2021 on time.
In addition, they must not have been claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax forms and have a figure greater than zero on line 20. of the Montana 2021 income tax form.
The media outlet notes that checks sent to eligible taxpayers, as of last July, offer up to $2,500 for married joint filers and up to $1,250 for single filers.
The exact amount an eligible taxpayer will receive is equal to the maximum amount based on their filing status or the amount on line 20 of their 2021 return, whichever is less, the Gazette details.
The Montana Department of Revenue notes that taxpayers who qualify for the refund will receive it automatically and will not need to file any additional forms to receive the payment.
How do I check the status of my payment?
If you have not yet received your refund payment, first check the status of your refund through Where’s My Refund? on their TransAction Portal (TAP).
If you owe any debt to the State of Montana, your refund may have been used to offset your balance.
If you received a notice on your 2020, 2021, or 2022 Form 2 and did not respond to that notice, the state will hold your refund until it can verify your identity. If you misplaced a notice from the state, contact the state of Montana.
