Nicole Kidman‘s beginnings in the Hollywood industry were not easy. The Australian actress, in an interview to ‘The Radio Times’, has confessed that she received a lot of criticism and ridicule. It is clear that they were wrong, since Nicole Kidman is one of the most established figures in Hollywood: she won an Oscar for best actress in 2003 for her role in ‘The Hours’ and accumulated five nominations throughout her career.
Nicole Kidman has confessed that she actually lied about her height in order to get a role. In certain auditions the requirements in this regard were strict and the Australian actress was forced to take off centimeters to have a chance.
“I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall’,” she stated in the interview.
“I was called ‘storky.’ [People would say], ‘How’s the air up there?!’ [Now I get], ‘You’re so much taller than I thought,’ [and then] grappling with how high my heels should be.”
“Whenever you go on the red carpet, they send the shoes, and the shoes are always so high. And I’m like, ‘Do they have a kitten heel? I’m just going to be the tallest person – the giraffe!’ “
“I had to talk my way through the door, because they were measuring you before you went in. I was mortified.”
Beyond the disadvantages of her height, the Australian actress has taken note of what she has experienced and has passed on the lesson learned to her two daughters: “What really matters is how you allow other people to say yes or no to you and whether you accept it”. In this sense, the 2003 Oscar winner considers that physical insecurities should not be important and has stressed the importance of internal “resilience”.
