Nick Saban is one of the most respected voices in college football. The legendary former coach won seven national titles-six of them with Alabama-and knows firsthand what it takes to build a championship team, and in his expert opinion, NIL is not one of those things.
In 2022, a radical change in regulations regarding a student athlete’s use of their name, image, and likeness turned the NCAA on its head. That change allowed college athletes to earn additional income beyond traditional scholarships, primarily through endorsements.
The change continues to generate controversy, with proponents and detractors exchanging opinions every other day. Saban is one of those who believes NIL is hurting college football more than it helps and warned that the current model is unsustainable.
Nick Saban’s warning
In a talk on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Saban again expressed his doubts about the NIL. “Players need to get compensated, no doubt. But it has to be done in a way where, you know, in some kind of way, have a competitive balance, and that every school has the same thing.”
He emphasized that the current system increases the disparity between programs. “One school can’t expend $30 million for players while another school is spending $3 million,” the former coach claimed.
The former Alabama coach’s criticism joins voices that have examined the issue from all angles, from those who say that the NIL strips college sports of their amateur spirit to those who believe that the IRS could soon put those revenues under the microscope.
Nick Saban for NCAA Commissioner?
Saban’s always clear and objective analysis has won him more than one admirer since his time as a coach. Now, as an analyst, some of his former colleagues consider him an ideal candidate to be college football commissioner.
People like head coaches James Franklin of Georgia, Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss, and Kirby Smart of Penn State say they would support him if he decides to run for the job. Some consider him the “obvious” choice, and his stance on NIL cements that view.
