We are already in the last week of January, and residents of California are awaiting the February CalFresh payments, which is California’s implementation of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, which provides monthly benefits to eligible low-income individuals and families to help them purchase nutritious food.
These benefits are distributed through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which works like a debit card at participating grocery stores and farmers markets.
The case number assigned to each CalFresh recipient is used to determine the specific date within the first 10 days of each month that benefits are loaded onto the EBT card.
The last digit of the case number dictates this payment date. For example, if the case number ends in ‘1’, benefits will be available on the 1st of the month.
How to claim CalFresh payments
To apply for CalFresh benefits, visit the Get CalFresh website and you will need to complete the online application. The county you live in will contact you within a couple of weeks for an eligibility interview. If approved, you will receive an EBT card within 10 days.
To check the status of your CalFresh payments, log into the Benefits Cal app to see upcoming payment dates and outstanding amounts. Alternatively, you can call the CalFresh helpline on 1-877-847-3663 or visit your local CDSS office for assistance.
CalFresh payments in February
In California, the CalFresh benefit disbursement dates are determined by the recipient’s case number, so they are delivered consecutively during the first 10 days of each month.
Analyzing data from some of the 5 million users who check their balance on the Propel app each month, it is estimated that around 92% of people get their benefits at midnight in California.
So, while most of the time you can expect to receive benefits at midnight, if they have not been loaded on your usual day, it may be worth waiting to contact your county to see if they arrive later that day.
