The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise could have a new opportunity to feature Johnny Depp in its upcoming release, the long-awaited Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Although in recent years there had been speculation about his replacement due to the controversy involving Depp and his legal dispute with Amber Heard, recent reports suggest that the doors for his return could be open.
According to Variety, Disney has yet to directly approach Depp, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been working on two scripts for the sixth film in the saga. One of these scripts would allow Depp to return as the charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow, although everything is still in the development stage and nothing has been officially confirmed. “Nothing has been ruled out,” an anonymous source noted.
The screenwriter revealed to Entertainment Tonight: “If it were up to me, of course. I love working with Depp. He’s fantastic and a good friend. I’ve talked to him, but we’ll see what happens”.
Depp’s return to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ doesn’t seem as unlikely as once thought, as despite the controversy generated by his public trial, the franchise remains a huge success. With a total worldwide gross of $4.5 billion, the saga has proven its viability, and Disney is still looking for ways to continue it.
As for Depp’s replacements that have been floated in recent years, they have yet to materialize, and fans of the saga are hoping that tensions between the actor and the studio can be overcome
