USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino was very clear in his first press conference as the head of this team leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Although his discourse seems a little idealist due to the reality of men’s soccer around the world, the message and challenge was issued to all the players. It is imperative they strive to be as successful as the Women’s United States National Soccer Team. To those who don’t know, the women’s team can be considered the Brazil, Germany, or Italy of women’s international soccer. They have won four World Cups and five Olympic Gold Medals in their history. Hands down, they are the greatest nation and the example to follow in this sport for women. Contrary to the men’s team that hasn’t reached the quarterfinals at the World Cup since 2002.
Pochettino issues stern challenge for the USMNT
Even Mauricio Pochettino is aware of how incredibly difficult it will be for the United States Men’s National Team to win the World Cup. But by issuing this challenge, he can at least awaken the fire inside all of these players’ bellies and hope to have a decent participation as hosts. He said: “We are here because we want to win. We are winners. We are going to compete, and compete is completely different than to play. … We have many examples next to us we need to follow. We need to believe that we can win, that we can win all our games, that we can win the World Cup. We have very talented players. Of course, the confidence was a little but low after the Copa América. We need to show that we play as a collective on the pitch.”
But if we are real, the United States Men’s National Soccer Team is not even at the top of Concacaf at the moment. In fact, Canada right now is the most competitive side of the region. Pinning them against World Cup champions Argentina or historic teams like Brazil, Germany, Spain or Italy will soon expose their weaknesses. The USMNT simply does not have the infrastructure or the history to back up Mauricio Pochettino’s statements. He knows this perfectly well but this message was necessary nonetheless. Having said what he said will likely motivate all the players to try and win the World Cup despite not having a chance to do so.
