June is one of the most important months for the LGBTQIA+ community around the world. June 28 is Pride Day and the date marked by the world to support a part of society that has long been denied its rights and freedoms.

Although the bulk of the official events will take place from July 1 to 10, Tuesday, June 28 is Pride Day. A moment in which all gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, asexual and any other gender-identified people are the true protagonists.

What is the origin of Pride Day?

Like many other days on which something is commemorated, Pride Day has its origins in the Stonewall riots in 1969.

On June 28 of that year, the gay community rose up against an NYPD raid on the Stonewall Inn bar in Manhattan, which was a meeting place for the community. Since homosexuality was illegal, it was persecuted by the authorities. However, they did not expect the response of the community, which responded to police violence.

Why June 28 is celebrated

A year later, on June 28, 1970, the first Pride Parade took place. It featured the Liberation March, in which activists from all over the country marched a total of 51 blocks to Central Park. Other cities, such as Boston and Los Angeles, also hosted demonstrations to celebrate the self-affirmation of the collective.

Those events are what gave rise to what is known today as International Pride Day and why it is celebrated on June 28.
