Prince Harry has reportedly declined an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace during his upcoming trip to London.
The Duke of Sussex is traveling alone for a court case against News Group Newspapers, choosing alternative accommodations instead of a royal residence.
Harry’s Security Arrangements in London
During this visit, Harry will receive limited police protection, a step down from the full taxpayer-funded security he lost in 2023. Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, has arranged for armed officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command to provide security. However, the arrangement has posed challenges for the understaffed police force.
“He is offering Harry limited police protection,” a source told The Mirror. “The Met has been trying to recruit officers on their days off because they don’t have a lot of spare staff.”
Harry‘s specific choice of accommodation has not been disclosed, leaving many speculating about where he will stay during this visit.
Previous Declines of Royal Hospitality
This decision mirrors Harry‘s earlier trips to Britain, where he similarly turned down royal offers. During a three-day visit to London in May 2024, he opted to stay in a hotel rather than at a royal property. Additionally, while attending his uncle Lord Robert Fellowes‘ funeral in Norfolk, Harry stayed at Althorp House-his late mother Princess Diana‘s childhood home-rather than accepting an offer to stay at a royal residence.
The Sussexes’ ties to royal properties were further severed when they handed over the keys to Frogmore Cottage in 2023. Losing this home, their last remaining residence in Britain, solidified their physical and symbolic separation from royal life.
Legal Battle Over Security Continues
Harry‘s visit comes amid ongoing legal challenges concerning his security arrangements. After the High Court ruled in February 2024 that it was lawful to strip Harry and Meghan Markle of taxpayer-funded protection, Harry has sought ways to regain some level of official security.
However, his efforts have yielded limited success, with no direct support from the royal family.
As part of the court’s ruling, Harry was ordered to cover 90% of the Britain’s Home Office’s legal expenses related to the case. Sir Peter Lane, the presiding judge, found no illegality in the original decision to remove the Sussexes’ security in 2020.
By declining Buckingham Palace’s hospitality yet again, Harry continues to navigate his Britain visits with a clear preference for independence, even as he faces ongoing legal and logistical hurdles.
