roger federer titles won Sin-sational: Incredible numbers from Sinner’s imperious AO 2025

A second Australian Open triumph was also a third Grand Slam triumph for Jannik Sinner. Here are some numbers behind his success." /><meta name="msapplication-TileColor" content="#0092d3

Jannik Sinner was simply too good at Australian Open 2025.

Across his seven matches at Melbourne Park, he dropped just two sets. He did not drop one across his last three matches. In Sunday’s final, Sinner successfully defended his crown by beating world No.2 Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6 (4) 6-3 without even offering up a break point.

Sinner is only the fourth player since the start of 1990 to not face a single break point in a men’s singles final at a Grand Slam, after Pete Sampras (Wimbledon 1995), Roger Federer (Wimbledon 2003) and Rafael Nadal (US Open 2017).

The final of AO 2025 was the first time the ATP world No.1 and No.2 have faced each other in the Melbourne Park showpiece since 2019, when Djokovic downed Nadal.

Djokovic won on straight sets on that occasion, and Sinner’s victory over Zverev marked only the fourth occasion the world No.1 has beaten the world No.2 in a Grand Slam final without dropping a set, after US Open 1984, AO 2016 and AO 2019.

Zverev said Sinner is in a “different universe” to any player on hard courts. And the Italian’s record is imperious.

He is just the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive singles titles at the hard-court Slams. The others on that list? John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Federer and Djokovic.

Aged 23 years and 163 days, Sinner became the second youngest man to achieve the feat. Only McEnroe (22 years and 206 days) was younger when he won his third straight hard-court major title.

Including the Davis Cup, which Sinner’s Italy won, he has played 41 hard-court matches since the start of August last year.

Sinner has lost just twice, to Andrey Rublev in the Montreal quarterfinals, and Carlos Alcaraz in the China Open final. In that time, Sinner has scooped five individual titles, including two Grand Slams and the ATP Finals.

He is just the fifth player across the past 35 years to have won each of their first three Grand Slam finals, after Gustavo Kuerten, Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Alcaraz.

Sunday’s victory brought up a 21st straight match win, extending the longest winning streak of his career.

With a 47th win while ranked as the world’s best player, Sinner has also now equalled Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors for the most wins from their first 50 matches as the ATP’s No.1.

WINS AS WORLD NO.1 (after 50 matches)

Player Wins
Jannik Sinner 47

Bjorn Borg 47

Jimmy Connors 47

Roger Federer 46

Andre Agassi  46

Sinner has now reeled off 10 straight wins over opponents ranked in the top 10. He is the youngest player to achieve that since Nadal did so in 2008.

But what is even more impressive is he has claimed each of those triumphs in straight sets. He is the first player to claim 10 such victories over other members of the ATP’s top 10.

Sinner has reached at least the quarterfinals in his last 15 Tour-level tournaments, excluding the ATP Finals. Only the “big three” had previously achieved that in the last 30 years.

Throwing it forward to this time next year, at AO 2026, Sinner will be looking to match Djokovic as the only man to have won three straight AO titles in the Open era – the Serbian having done so twice, between 2011-2013, and then 2019-2021.

Sinner is the youngest man to win back-to-back AO singles titles since Jim Courier, in 1992 and 1993.

At AO 2025, Sinner topped the charts for first serve return points won (146), second serve return points won (128), while only Tommy Paul (35) converted more break points than Sinner’s 30.

He has become the first Italian player – male or female – to win three majors, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli’s two titles. With 68 Slam match wins, Sinner ranks behind only Fabio Fognini (71) among Italian men.

Since the start of 2024, Sinner’s dominance has been unrivalled. He has won nine titles, and lost just four of 72 Tour-level matches in which he won the first set – three of those defeats came to Alcaraz.

Of players born since the start of 1990, Sinner (79.1%, 68-18) trails only Alcaraz (84.2%, 64-12) for win rate at the majors.

Right now, Sinner seems unstoppable. There is a task of now transferring his hard-court success to the other surfaces, but his supreme levels at AO 2025 proved he is on top of the world.
