The 2023 Ryder Cup takes place from September 29 to October 1 at the Marco Simone course in Rome, Italy.
Both the U.S. and European teams consist of 12 players each for a competition that takes place over three days.
On the first two days (Friday and Saturday) there are four pairs matches in the morning and another four in the afternoon, in two categories which we will explain below.
It is not compulsory for all golfers to play on Friday or Saturday, but they are required to play in the individual matches on Sunday.
The most important thing is that the competition format is match play, i.e. the winner of each hole counts and the overall number of strokes at the end of a round is not taken into account, as is usual in a regular tournament. The match is won by whoever wins the most holes, with the possibility of a draw.
Ryder Cup scoring
Each match is worth one point and matches that end in a draw are awarded half a point to each team. The first team to reach 14.5 points wins the trophy. If the aggregate score ends in a 14-14 draw, the team that is the reigning Ryder Cup winner retains the trophy.
Friday and Saturday Format
Foursomes (Friday and Saturday morning)
In the Foursome, each team plays a single ball, alternately hit by each player. The team that completes the hole in the fewest strokes wins the hole. One player tees off on the odd holes, and another on the even holes.
Fourball (Friday and Saturday afternoons)
Fourball is played in teams of two players. Each player plays his own ball and the team of the player with the best score wins the hole.
Sunday format
Singles
On the third day the matches, also in matchplay format, are individual matches. 12 matches will be played. Twelve matches will be played, with each match won earning one point for the winning team. In case of a draw, each team gets half a point.
