Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant were the cornerstones of the one of the most dominant NBA teams to ever play the game.
The Los Angeles Lakers leant on their two star players at the turn of the millennium and were able to win a three-peat between 2000 and 2002.
However, as is the case with a lot of star duos, their relationship was more complex than was shown on the court.
It is understood that Kobe Bryant was frustrated by O’Neal‘s lack of offseason discipline, and that they could have won even more titles together if the big man had been as committed as Bryant.
For a short period, Shaq and Kobe set aside their differences. Phil Jackson, one of the NBA’s legendary coaches, helped them find common ground, much as he did in Chicago with the likes of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.
However, the Lakers‘ duo compromised, setting aside their pride, which led to their incredible three-peat-the last in NBA history. However, their true appreciation for each other only emerged in 2001.
What were relations like in Los Angeles?
NBA Bay Area correspondent Vishal Kolar discussed this dynamic with Leonard Armato, the mastermind behind Shaq‘s marketing brand.
Armato shared insights into Shaq and Kobe‘s relationship and the moment that changed it all.
Armato explained that Shaq, the veteran alpha male, clashed with the young, ambitious Kobe.
“Through Phil Jackson’s guidance, they learned to work together,” Armato admitted.
Armato recalled a significant event at the 2001 Sports Spectacular, where Kobe presented an award to Shaq. Shaq then acknowledged Kobe.
“He’s the best player in basketball,” O’Neal declared.
Such a statement was a huge gesture from O’Neal and it led to a reconciliation in the relationship, helping the Lakers to two more championships… although this wasn’t the end of the story.
Despite their success, friction resurfaced as Shaq’s dedication waned compared to Bryant‘s. In 2004, Shaq was traded to the Miami Heat, reigniting tensions between them.
After the trade, Shaq and Kobe competed fiercely to outdo each other. Their feud escalated, with Shaq even mocking Kobe in lyrics.
How did the pair come together again?
However, during the 2009 All-Star game, they rekindled their partnership. They were named Co-MVPs, and Kobe‘s gesture of giving the trophy to Shaq‘s son, Shareef, touched Shaq deeply. This moment marked the end of their feud, although their competitive edge remained.
