NASA has introduced the ‘Spot the Station’ mobile app, designed to help people track the International Space Station (ISS) from Earth.
It will also provide access to information and resources about the space laboratory.
According to Robyn Gatens, the director of the ISS, the station, which is situated 400 kilometers above Earth, is anything but “far out of our reach”.
“Even after 23 years of continuous human presence aboard the International Space Station, it’s incredibly exciting to see the station when you look up at just the right moment,” Gatens noted.
“The orbiting laboratory that continues to provide so many unique, tangible benefits for humanity really isn’t that far out of reach.”
NASA’s objective with its new app
The app is available for both iOS and Android devices and offers an augmented reality interface allowing users to locate the space station and share real-time images and videos of their sightings.
To enhance the experience, users can register on a dedicated website named ‘Spot the Station’ to receive mobile notifications about upcoming opportunities to observe the ISS from their location, as the station is only visible when the area is dark, and the station passes overhead.
Developed by NASA’s International Space Station Program and the Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation, the ‘Spot the Station’ app encourages user feedback for continual improvement.
Its release coincides with the upcoming 25th anniversary of the ISS’s operations, initiated with the connection of the Zarya and Unity modules on December 6, 1998.
“The space station advances scientific knowledge in Earth, space, physical, and biological sciences for the benefits of people living on our home planet,” NASA notes.
“In addition, the station serves as the world’s leading laboratory for cutting-edge research and technology development that supports human and robotic exploration of destinations beyond low Earth orbit, including the Moon and Mars.”
This innovative app opens up opportunities for the public to actively engage with the ISS and its mission, allowing them to witness its presence in the night sky and share their experiences.
