True-crime is still a protagonist on Netflix. The platform continues to bet on this type of documentary with the arrival of ‘The Myth of the Zodiac Killer’, which tries to reveal what happened about one of the most mysterious cases in the criminal history of the United States: the Zodiac Killer.
What is ‘I Am Zodiac’ on Netflix about?
The Zodiac gained popularity in the late 1960s and mid-1970s for sending letters and cryptograms to the media and police, in which he revealed clues about future crimes and the identity of those involved. Officially, the Zodiac is attributed with seven murders, but the killer, in a letter he wrote in 1974, said he may have killed 36 people, something that has never been confirmed.
The series focuses on the unique, never-before-seen testimony of a family who claims to have been close to the prime suspect, a former teacher named Arthur Leigh Allen. After 50 years, new forensic evidence and techniques may be close to solving this case.
The docuseries deals with the hypothesis that this teacher, accused of pedophilia and a close friend of the Seawater family, could have been the main perpetrator of the crimes. The testimonies of siblings Connie, Dan and David Seawater will be key, as all three recount several coincidences involving the teacher with the murders and also point out that their mother, Phyllis, knew more than she seemed.
Phyllis gains prominence in the series by dealing with five key aspects around her figure: the secret box, the imprisonment in Atascadero, the master of encryption, excursions to crime scenes and blood. However, one aspect that may be more important in the series is a knife that Allen gave to Connie’s son before he died.
