Rondon’s calm finish sent Mexican goalkeeper Julio Gonzalez diving in the wrong direction.
Mexico had ample opportunities to equalize, especially in the final minutes when Venezuelan defender Miguel Navarro was penalized for a handball.
However, Venezuelan goalkeeper Rafael Romo heroically saved Orbelin Pineda’s penalty attempt, preserving Venezuela’s lead.
Romo’s performance was stellar, making five crucial saves from Mexico’s 18 shots, five of which were on target.
Mexico now faces do-or-die match against Ecuador
The match was dominated by Mexico in the first half, with Santiago Gimenez missing a critical chance in the 19th minute.
Despite their dominance, Mexico couldn’t capitalize, and their struggle to find the net continued from their previous match.
Venezuela’s victory propels them into the tournament semifinals, while Mexico, having lost four of their last six matches, faces a do-or-die situation against Ecuador on Sunday to avoid elimination.
This defeat marks a disappointing outcome for Mexico, especially after their bittersweet 1-0 win over Jamaica, where they lost captain Edson Alvarez to injury.
