He went as far as to describe the logo’s removal as “censorship” and a case of “woke gone wrong.”
Daines expressed his approval of the potential move, praising the NFL and Commanders for their efforts to honor Native American heritage and work with the Wetzel family, who were behind the original design. “I applaud the Commanders & the NFL for their commitment to never censor the logo again,” he stated.
Controversial logo sparks debate off the field
The controversy is further fueled by Daines’ proposed legislation for funding the revitalization of the RFK Stadium site, which he has said he would block unless the Commanders agreed to preserve and honor their historic logo. This legislation, which was approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has added fuel to speculation about the team’s future branding.
While some fans are excited by the idea of returning to the “Redskins” name, Commanders owner Josh Harris has firmly rejected that possibility. He emphasized that the name would not return, citing the importance of unity and the team’s need to focus on winning. “For obvious reasons, the old name can’t come back,” Harris stated in August.
Despite this, there have been positive talks about honoring the old logo on throwback merchandise, with plans to establish a foundation supporting Native American causes. The Wetzel family has been involved in the discussions, having been honored by the team in both Montana and Maryland.
